Who or what is Harold?
Harold is our mascot, a laughing baby penguin.
He hails from Montreal and lived
his earliest years in captivity, in a crowded, dirty
zoological exhibit where curious onlookers would peer
at him through a plexiglass window. Naturally, Harold
wanted more out of life and he yearned to be free.
One evening, after the janitors locked up for the night,
Harold bid adieu to his fellow penguins and broke free, got
on the Montreal subway, where no one found it particularly
unusual that a small penguin would be riding along, and he
found his way to the St. Lawrence River.
Soon after he started swimming in the St. Lawrence River he
asked for directions to New York from the first mate of a
passing ship.
Abord the St. Jean-Sur-Richelieu
ship, Harold befriended a nice older penguin couple
named Sherman and Gloria, who were vacationing in
Canada. The kindly Sherman sent Harold on his way down
the Richelieu with some loonies (those are dollar
coins for you non-Canadians) in case Harold needed to
buy some food.
After crossing customs, Harold
made his way through Lake Champlain and (after almost
taking a wrong turn towards Vermont) finally arrived
in New York, where he was now free to enjoy life and
all that the city had to offer, including seriously
funny theater.
